Sediments from Paldang, Uiam and Chuncheon Lake has been collected for analysis of trace metals frationated into the reducible, oxidizable and total fractions. Trace metals (Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn and Cd, Pb) in each fration were determined by Atomic Absortion spetrometry and ICP-MS. The results indicated that the oxidizable fraction extracted Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr dominantly in the three lakes, but Pb and Cd were extracted mainly in the reducible fraction. The oxidizable fraction showed high correlation with the organic matter contents.

Pollution potential of sediment and pore water on overlying water quality in Paldang Lake was investigated. In the surface sediments of Paldang Lake, a positive linear correlation was seen between phosphorus and grain size, and two-thirds of P existed as inorganic P. Dissolution of potential of complex-P was high due to change of sediment environment, showing that the humic state of organic matter was low. Most of metals were present as complex of organic matter, showing that a positive linear correlation was seen between iron, manganese, and organic matter. A suboxic environment existed near the surface sediments, and pollution potential of water quality seems to be high due to dissolved nutrients in pore waters.

This experiment was performed to study the acute toxicity and the bioaccumulation of mercuric chloride and methylmercuric chloride on Carrasius aurartus in terms of LC₅₀ and the bioconcentration factor(BCF). 96 hr LC₅₀ value was 0.224mg/L and 0.074mg/L for mercuric chloride and methylmercuric chloride, respectively. BCF values of mercuric chloride and methylmercuric chloride were more than 1000 in all experimental groups, so that the bioaccumulation test of mercury was required to change the static test into the flow-through test.

Biodegradation of cruide oil at sea surface is limited with nutrients concentration. The limiting factors of cruide oil biodegradation in natural seawater have responsed to the addition of the nitrogen and phosphorus. Nutrients consisting of the ratio of 10 part ammonium chloride and 1 part of potassium phosphate were encapsuled with waxes (n-paraffin and bees wax as the wall materials). We confirm the biodegradation is enhanced by the addition of microcapsules. The amount of liquid transported after the infinite time expressed in terms of the improved microcapsule weight is about 14.2%. The diffusivity of the internal water is expressed in terms of the concentration of liquid by The removed model oil by pseudomonas sp. was measured with different supply modes of microcapsules. 95% removal of the model oil (n-hexadecane) was observed in 10days.

Aquatic humic substances of natural origin are important in water chemistry as well as water treatment processes. They have great effect on coagulation, ozone oxidation, activated carbon adsorption, complexation with metals and trihalomethane formation. This study, aquatic humic substances in Paldang and Daechung lake were extracted and characterized. Humic and fulvic acid components were quantified and UV-VIS spectra were obtained. Molecular mass distribution was analyzed using gel chromatography. Infrared and fluorescence methods were also used to characterize the humic substances.
