Biological and chemical sensors are the two most frequently used sensors to monitor the water resource. Chemical sensor is very accurate to pick up the types and to measure the concentration of the chemical substance. Drawback is that it works for just one type of chemical substance. Therefore a lot of expensive monitoring system needs to be installed to determine the safeness of the water, which costs too much expense. Biological sensor, on the contrary, can judge the degree of pollution of the water with just one monitoring system. However, it is not easy to figure out the type of contaminant with a biological sensor. In this study, an endeavor is made to identify the toxicant in the water using the shape of the chlorophyll fluorescence induction curve (FIC) from a biological monitoring system. Wem-tox values are calculated from the amount of flourescence of contaminated and reference water. Curve fitting is executed to find the representative curve of the raw data of Wem-tox values. Then the curves are digitalized at the same interval to train the neural network model. Taguchi method is used to optimize the neural network model parameters. The optimized model shows a good capacity to figure out the toxicant from FIC.

The objective of this study was to develop and apply a water quality simulation model for the evaluation of ungaged watershed. The Modified WASP5 consisted of three sub-models, LOAD-M, DYN-M, and EUT-M. LOAD-M, an empirical model, estimates runoff loadings using point and non-point source data of villages. Daecheong Dam watershed was selected for the research to calibrate, verify and application of Modified-WASP5. LOAD-M model was established using field data collected from all items of water quality and water quantity gaging stations of the watersheds, and was applied to the ungauged watersheds, taking the watershed properties under consideration. The result of water quality simulation using Modified-WASP5 shows that the observed BOD data of Yongpo and Daechong Dam in 1999 were 0.8 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L, and simulated data were 0.9 mg/L and 0.9 mg/L, respectively. In case of 1999, average BOD concentrations were 0.8 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L. Simulated concentration showed 1.1 mg/L and 1.5 mg/L, respectively. Generally, the simulation results were in good agreement with the observed data. This study was focused on formulating an integrated model for evaluating ungauged watersheds. Even though simulation results varied slightly due to limited availability of data, the model developed in this study would be a useful tool for the assessment and management of ungauged watersheds.

Hot air sparging is a groundwater remediation technique, in which organic contaminants volatilized into hot air from the saturated to vadose zone. In the laboratory diesel (10,000 mg TPH/kg) was spiked in contaminated saturated aquifer soil. The hot air (34.9±2.7°C) was injected in intermittent (Q=1,500 mL/min, 10 minute injection and 10 minute idle) modes. We performed microcosm tests using the groundwater samples to assess TPH reductive remediation activity. For Terminal-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of eubacterial communities in sludge of wastewater treatment plants and soil of experiment site, the 16S rDNA was amplified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) from the sludge and the soil. The obtained 16S rDNA fragments were digested with Msp I and separated by electrophoresis gel. We found various sequence types for hot air sparging experiment with sludge soil samples that were closely related to Bacillus (149 bp, Firmicutes), Methlobacterium (149 bp, Euryarchaeotes), Pseudomonas (492 bp, γ-Proteobacteria), etc., in the clone library. In this study we find that TPH-water was reduced to 78.9% of the initial value in this experiment aquifer. The results of the present study suggests that T-RFLP method may be applied as a useful tool for the monitoring in the TPH contaminated soil fate of microorganisms in natural microbial community.

In this study, we investigated the nitrification/denitrification rate and classification of output nitrogen of a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system with the variation of COD loads ; COD loads of 0.3, 0.4, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 kgCOD/m3·d were tested to determine the optimum conditions for the operation of the SBR and increase its nitrogen removal efficiency. As the COD loads increased, the nitrification rate at aerobic(I) period and the denitrification rate at anoxic(I) period were decreased. With the variation of COD loads, the amounts of nitrogen removed in the clarified water effluent were 63.9, `54.2, 34.7, 22.5, 13.7, 12.5 and 26.5 mg/cycle, respectively. The amounts of nitrogen removed during the sludge waste process were 19.5, 26.6, 41.0, 47.3, 58.1, 72.4 and 88.1 mg/cycle, respectively. The amounts of nitrogen removed by denitrification were 66.8, 69.3, 68.9, 56.5, 39.5, 7.3 and 0.0 mg/cycle, respectively, indicating that COD load more than 0.7 kgCOD/m3·d decreases the amounts of denitrified nitrogen. The nitrogen mass balances were calculated as the percentages of nitrogen removed in the clarified water effluent or by denitrification and sludge waste processing in each cycle of SBR operation and were 99.0, 98.5, 95.4, 82.1, 73.0, 60.5 and 74.8% for COD loads of 0.3, 0.4, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 kgCOD/m3·d, respectively.

To develop the continuous water quality monitoring system using the daphnid Daphnia sp., the growth of test animal, sensitivity, and behaviour response of toxicants were observed. Growth of test animal significantly increased with increasing the food density under the 90~105 mg/L (CaCO3) hardness, except the concentration of food (Chrollela sp.) was exceeded than optimal food supply. Behaviour responses of test animals were continuously analyzed by changes of fractal dimension value (FDV). The FDV sharply decreased after exposure to the concentrations of 0.13 mg/L copper, 0.06 mg/L lead, and 0.38 mg/L cadmium. In these concentrations, mortality and abnormal behaviour of daphnids exhibited within ca. 1.0-h after exposure. Comparison of 24-h LC50 values with other zooplankton species indicated that sensitivity of the Daphnia sp. Was higher than most zooplankton for lead, and brain shrimp, rotifer, and water flea (Ceriodaphnia dubia, D. magna) for copper, and brain shrimp, water flea (D. lumholzi), and amphipod for cadmium. Based on the above experimental results, significant relationship between toxicity and behaviour response of Daphnia sp. was supported the high potential of water quality monitoring system. Consequently, behavioural monitoring method in this study suggests a good estimation tool for detection of the discharged toxicants in water body and for ecotoxicological assessment aquatic organisms.

To recognize the spatial and temporal variability of water temperature and dissolved oxygen in the Youngsan reservoir formed after dike construction, water temperature and dissolved oxygen data have been observed and analyzed from April, 2002 until March, 2003. As the results, certain stratifications were not distinctly observed in the Youngsan reservoir during summer, which was estimated due to the drainage characteristic from the Youngsan water gates. The yearly variation of water temperature in the Youngsan reservoir is shown seasonally ups and downs by the heat exchange between the atmosphere and the reservoir. On the other hand, dissolved oxygen and water temperature in the Youngsan reservoir have been shown inversed proportional correlation. As the calculation results of residence time and water exchange rate, it is considered that the feature of oxygen distribution is determined by the drainage characteristics caused the shortest residence time during summer, which also disturbed the formation of stratification in the Youngsan reservoir.

It is often believed that a more complex water quality model is better able to simulate reality. The more complex a model, however, the more parameters are involved thus increases the cost and uncertainty of modeling processes. The objective of this study was to compare the performance of two steady-state river water quality models, QUAL2E and QUAL-NIER, that have different complexity. QUAL-NIER is recently developed by National Institute of Environmental Research aiming to enhance the simulation capability of QUAL2E for eutrophic rivers. It is a carbon based model that considers different forms, such as dissolved versus particulate and labile versus refractory, of carbon and nutrients, and the contribution of autochthonous loading due to algal metabolism. The models were simultaneously applied to Nakdong River and their performance was evaluated by statistical verification with field data. Both models showed similar performance and satisfactorily replicated the longitudinal variations of BOD, T-N, T-P, Chl.a concentrations along the river. The algal blooms occurred at the stagnant reaches of downstream were also reasonably captured by the models. Although QUAL-NIER somewhat reduced the magnitude of errors, the hypothesis tests revealed no statistical evidence to justify its better performance. The contribution of autochthonous carbon and nutrient load by algal metabolism was insignificant because the hydraulic retention time is relatively short compare to the time scale of kinetic reactions. The results imply that the kinetic processes included in QUAL-NIER are too complex for the nature and scale of the real processes involved, thus needs to be optimized for improving the modeling efficiency.

This study was performed to assess the potential use of ozone or UV radiation for the treatment of water contaminated with sulfamethoxazole (SMX), which is frequently used antibiotic in human and veterinary medicines, especially focusing on the kinetic study and effect of pH. In a study using ozone alone, kinetic study was performed to determine second-order rate constant (kO3,SMX) for the reactions of SMX with ozone, which was found to be 1.9 × 106 M-1s-1 at pH 7. The removal efficiencies of SMX by ozone were decreased with increase of pH due to rapid decomposition of ozone under the condition of various pH (2.5, 5.3, 7, 8, 10). In a UV irradiation study at 254 nm, a kinetic model for direct photolysis of SMX was developed with determination of quantum yield (0.08 mol Einstein-1) and molar extinction coefficient (15,872 M-1cm-1) values under the condition of quantum shielding due to the presence of reaction by-products formed during photolysis. For effect of pH on photolysis of SMX, SMX in the anionic state (S-, pH > 5.6), most prevalent form at environmentally relevant pH values,degraded more slowly than in the neutral state (SH, 1.85 < pH < 5.6) by UV radiation at 254 nm.

This study was conducted to know the characteristics of agricultural non-point source pollutants runoff by rainfall events at the upper catchment of Goseong reservoir in Gonjy city, Chungnam Province. For this study, the monitoring sites of the research catchment were set nineteen during the research period (between June 2005 and October 2006). Average runoff coefficient were observed 0.51 in 2005, 0.71 in 2006, respectively. The correlation coefficient (r) between the rainfall and peak-flow was investigated 0.787. By rainfall events, the water quality of the sites were shown like this : BOD 0.555~9.60 mg/L, T-N 0.0 1~13.50 mg/L, T-P 0.002~2.952 mg/L, and SS N.D~820.0 mg/L. The strong rainfall intensity was the most important factor of the soil erosion. The gabs of the arithmetic mean concentrations and the flow weighted mean concentrations were observed as the followings : BOD 0.0~29.2%, T-N 0.1~11.4%, T-P 0.4~95.2%, and SS 1.7~57.0% in 2005, and BOD 1. 0~11.9%, T-N 0.7~7.3%, T-P 9.9~36.5%, and SS 6.6~36.5% in 2006, respectively. The BOD pollution load was 2,117 kg (36% of the total BOD loading of survey periods) while, T-N was 3,209.0 kg (27.9% of the total T-N loading of survey periods), T-P was 136.4 kg (37.4% of the total T-P loading of survey periods) and SS was 72,733.8 kg (51.8% of the total SS loading of survey periods) in the year 2005. In case of 2006, BOD load was 1,321.7, T-N was 2,845.8, T-P was 42.9, and SS was 16,275.8 kg, respectively.

Evaporation of selected toxic volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons was studied in laboratory soil columns. The evaporation values were obtained for the ten volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons at two different temperatures (12°C and 21°C) from columns filled with silty clay loam and sandy loam soils. 1,1,1-Trichloroethane, trichloroethylene and chloroform evaporated considerably (36.7~54.6% removal), carbon tetrachloride, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, tetrachloroethylene, 1,3-dichlorobenzene, dichlorobromethane and dibromochloromethane to a lesser extent (15.3~39.3% removal), and bromoform evaporated poorly (<10 percent removal) at both temperature. Volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons concentration did not affect evaporation, no statistically significant difference in evaporation between the soil types was found. However, temperature affected evaporation, the effect of concentration on the evaporation was not conclusive.

Water reuse of effluent is limited, due to bacteria and chromaticity or turbidity which may result in low perception of water quality. Consequently, this study showed a method in the reuse of treated wastewater by a diversified treatment method, with separation of centralized reformation of aeration tank into pre-treatment with minimum installation of facilities, and post-treatment, applying advanced oxidation treatment. A pilot plant experiment was performed using Sym-Bio process adopting an NADH Sensor without modification of the exiting aeration tank. The Dissolved Ozone Flotation process, which is an advanced oxidation process, to treat the remaining organics, nutrients, chromaticity, turbidity and bacteria. As a result in the Sym-Bio process, the biological treatment, even on the condition of single stage reaction tank, the treatment efficiencies of BOD, CODMn, CODCr, SS and T-N were 96.6%, 84.6%, 88.25%, 95.1% and 71.0%, respectively, while that for T-P was 25.0%, which required further treatment. In the Dissolved Ozone Flotation process, the advanced oxidation treatment, the treatment efficiencies of BOD, CODMn, CODCr, SS, T-N, T-P, chromaticity, turbidity, bacteria, coliforms were 78.9%, 34.6%, 28.7%, 48.0%, 70.4%, 82.4%, 84.0%, 74.5%, 99.8% and 99.4%, respectively.

This work was performed to develop a model possible to predict the influent flow and influent components, which are one of main disturbances causing process problems at the operation of municipal wastewater treatment plant. In this study, artificial neural network (ANN) was used in order to develop a model that was able to predict the influent flow, CODMn, SS, TN 1 day-ahead, 2day-ahead and 3 day ahead. Multi-layer feed-forward back-propagation network was chosen as neural network type, and tanh-sigmoid function was used as activation function to transport signal at the neural network. And Levenberg-Marquart (LM) algorithm was used as learning algorithm to train neural network. Among 420 data sets except missing data, which were collected between 2005 and 2006 at field plant, 210 data sets were used for training, and other 210 data sets were used for validation. As result of it, ANN model for predicting the influent flow and components 1-3day ahead could be developed successfully. It is expected that this developed model can be practically used as follows: Detecting the fault related to effluent concentration that can be happened in the future by combining with other models to predict process performance in advance, and minimization of the process fault through the establishment of various control strategies based on the detection result.

With globally increasing interests in climate-soil-vegetation system, a new stochastic model of soil water and plant water stress is derived for better understanding of the soil water and plant water stress dynamics and their role in water-controlled ecosystem. The steady-state assumption is used for simplifying the equations. The derived model is simple yet realistic that it can account for the essential features of the system. The model represents the general characteristics of rainfall, soil, and vegetation; i.e. the soil moisture constitutes the decrease form of the steady-state and the plant water stress becomes increasing with the steady state when the rainfall is decreased. With this model, further deep study for the effects of soil water and plant water stress on the system will be accomplished.

Infiltration facilities are effective instruments to mitigate flood and can increase base runoff in urban watersheds. In order to analyze effects of infiltration trenches physical model experiments were conducted. The physical model facility consists of two soil tanks, artificial rainfall generators, tensiometers, and piezometers. The experiment was conducted by nine times and each case differed in rainfall intensity, rainfall duration and the type of ground surface. Measured quantities in the experiments are as follows: surface runoff, subsurface runoff, trench pipe runoff, groundwater level, water content, etc. The following resulted from the model experiment: The volume of subsurface runoff at trench watershed was maximum 78.3% compared with rainfall. This value is bigger than that of ordinary rate of subsurface runoff, and shows a groundwater recharge effect of trench. The time of runoff passing through the trench became earlier and the volume of runoff became larger with the increase of inflow into the trench, while trench exfiltration into ground became relatively smaller. The results of this study presented above show that infiltration trenches are effective instruments to increase base runoff during dry periods.

Degradations of phenol and chlorinated compounds mixtures were studied with ultrasound of 20 kHz and 0.57, 1.14 W/mL. In presence of carbon tetrachloride (CT), degradation rate of phenol is faster than chloroform (CF), dichloromethane (DCM) and phenol solution. It is due to that CT generates of free chlorine (HOCl and OCl-) from the sonochemical degradation and plays a role of hydrogen atom scavenger. CF and DCM are react with free chlorine, so amount of free chlorine is smaller than CT solution. The degradation rates of chlorinated compounds decreased with co-presence of phenol in the solution due to the distribution ultrasonic energy to both compounds. The measured chloride ion was lower than the theoretical concentration assuming complete degradation. This means not all the contaminants destructed went through complete degradation.

The Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) existing in a water includes both hydrophobic and hydrophilic substances however, most of the discussion focuses on hydrophobic substances. The hydrophobic fraction was easily removed by absorption or coagulation more than hydrophilic fraction. Therefore, control of the hydrophilic fraction is very important in water treatment process. This study is to determine the variation of DOC, the removal efficiency of DOC, and Trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) after each stage of water treatment process by fractionating Natural Organic Matters (NOM) into hydrophobic and hydrophilic substance. DOC from raw water was fractionated at acidic pH (pH<2) using XAD 8 resin column, into two fraction : hydrophobic substance (i.e. humic substance) adsorbed on XAD 8 and hydrophilic substance which represent the organics contained in the final effluent. THMFP was carried out according to the following set condition: Cl2/DOC=4 mg/mg, incubation at 25°C in darkness, pH 7 adjust with HCl or NaOH as necessary, and 72hour-contact time. THMs analyzed in this study were chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethan, and bromoform. Sewage was almost evenly split between the hydrophobic (56%) and hydrophilic fraction (44%). But, Aldrich humic substance (AHS) was found to contain less hydrophilics (14%) than hydrophobics (86%). The formation of THMs may depend on the source which is characterized by the composition of organic matters such as AHS and sewage. The THMFP yield of sewage and AHS were assessed as follows. The value of the THMFP reaction yield, AHS 172.65 μg/mg, is much higher than that of sewage 41.68 μ g/mg. This illustrates possible significant difference in THMFP according to the component type and the proportion of organic matter existing in water source. Apparently AHS react with chlorine to produce more THMFP than do the smaller molecules found in sewage. Water treatment process may reduce THMFP, nevertheless residual DOC (the more hydrophilic substance) has significant THMFP. Further reduction in organic halide precursors requires application of alternative treatment techniques.

Ultrasonic cavitational energy distributions were measured in a large-scale sonoreator. In application of 110 and 170 kHz of ultrasound, the cavitational energy was just detected near the transducer module. However 35 and 72 kHz ultrasound made good distributions from the module to the end of the sonoreactor, Especially, 72 kHz ultrasound application showed most stable and highest cavitational energy value through the whole length. In the comparison between input power and cavitational energy, linear relationships were obtained in 35 and 72 kHz and it was anticipated that these results would be used for the optimization of input power for the design of sonoreactors. And three dimensional energy distribution was depicted through the mapping of cavitaional energy. Average energy in the large-scale sonoreactor was estimated as 62.8 W, which was about 40 % of input power.
