The properties and uses of zeolite are being explored in many scientific disciplines: mordern inorganic and organic chemistry, ceramics, physical chemistry, biochemistry, catalysis, and in all types of chemical engineering process technology. The wide variety of applications includes separation and recovery of normal paraffin hydrocarbons, recovering heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater, and removal of atmospheric pollutants. The applications of zeolite have been carried out in the various aspects because of its large cation exchange capacity and adsorption properties. In this paper, the adsorption effect of heavy metal ions in wastewater on zeolite by batch adsorption process is studied. The results abstained were as follows; The amounts adsorbed ions were changeable by initial pH and ionic concentration. The order in heavy metal ions were adsorbed on zeolite was; Pb(II) $gt;$gt;Cd(II) $gt; Cu(II) $gt; Zn(II). This tendency was interpreted by the fact that the smaller the radius of hydrated metal ion is, the more is the metal ion adsorbed on zeolite. The adsorption rate was relatively fast and it was confirmed by shaking test. Under the same conditions, the heavy metal ions were more adsorbed on clinoptilolite than on mordenite. The species of exchangeable cation of zeolite had an effect on its removing ability and the sodium exchanged type was the most excellent.

The feeding rate of coagulant in the water treatment plant can be estimated by the jar-test in Laboratory. However the quality of the tested water is not equivalent to that of the chemical feeded water because the time gap is laid between jar-test and feeding rate control, it takes about half and hour, and the jar-test is proceeded periodically and not continuous. Another word, the result of jar-test does not accurately fit to the quality of raw water flowing into the feeding basin right at the time. Thus, we should make a formular of the feeding rate in accordance with the quality of the raw water of individual treatment plant. The parameters affected to the chemical feeding rate are pH, alkalinity, turbidity, and temperature of the raw water. We can get the feeding rate P for Han river raw water by measuring these parameters and the empirical formular is as follow. P=(3.14-0.04 t)·A^(0.21)·T^(0.36) As we draw up the equation in program at the chemical feeding control computer, we can timely feed more proper chemical to get better quality in waterworks.

The unit mass discharge (UMD) of the volume of wastewater and some major pollutants loadings and the characteristic of wastewater from the cattlehide tannery, which can be used as a indirect parameter in controlling industrial use of water and wastewater, were investigated. The results are as follows. 1. Average concentrations of BOD, COD and SS in the wastewater from the cattlehide tannery were 2,063 ㎎/ℓ, 1,721 ㎎/ℓ and 2,187 ㎎/ℓ, respectively. The ratio of BOD and COD was 1.2 : 1. 2. Average removal efficiencies of BOD, COD and SS by domestic wastewater treatment plants were 94%, 93% and 96%, respectively. 3. On the basis of the number of employee (per capita) and the weight (ton) of raw materials and products, UMDs (Y, ㎥) of the volume of wastewater from the tannery were Y= 1,514.4X-77,888 (R²=0.936), Y=37.440X-24,159 (R²=0.914) and Y=519.05X-20,693 (R² = 0.962), respectively. From these results, UMDs showed to correlate highly with these three units, but did not correlate with the building area and the sale amount. 4. UMDs (Y, Kg) of BOD loading on the basis of employee, raw material and product were Y = 3,792.7X - 258,747 (R² = 0.885), Y = 95.880X - 139,619 (R² = 0.904) and Y= 1,303.6X- 117,389 (R²=0.915), respectively, so the correlation between UMDs and these three units was highly significant. In the UMDs of COD loading, these correlations were highly shown, also, but on the basis of building area and sale amount, these were not shown. 5. UMDs (Y, Kg) of SS loading on employee, raw material and product were Y = 4,584X-321,989 (R²=0.754), Y=125.74X-250,019 (R²=0.906) and Y = 1,648.6X - 189.185 (R² = 0.853), respectively. From these results, UMDs were shown to correlate highly only with these three units.

Trophic states were surveyed in a reservoir on the Han River, Lake Paldang, receiving waters from two rivers, the North Han River and South Han River. Chlorophyll a concentration, secchi disc transparency, BOD, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentration and total phosphorus (TP) concentration were investigated at three stations (dam site and the inlet region of the North Han River and the inlet region of the South Han River) and the phosphorus loading into Lake Paldang was measured. Chlorophyll a, BOD, SRP and TP were highest at the inlet region of the South Han River and lowest at the inlet region of the North Han River and transparency showed the opposite trend. Trophic states of Lake Paldang can be classified as mesotrophic level at the dam site and the inlet region of the North Han River and eutrophic level at the inlet region of the South Han River. The phosphorus loading into Lake Paldang was between the dangerous critical loading and the permissible critical loading of Vollenweider-DECD critical loading model. The phosphorus loading of the South Han River was about 2 times larger than of the North Han River.

For the study of phosphorus influencing in water quality, TP and PO₄-P were surveyed a time a month at 18 points of Jungrang stream and downstream in Han river tributary and Jinwi stream in Ansung stream tributary. To study phosphorus improvement in stream resulted from supplying phosphate free detergent on July, 1988 in Korea, 3 points of agriculture, urban, complex area near Jungrang stream were selected and the flowing rates of ABS, phosphorus each point were surveyed for a whole day of April, 1988, supplying phosphate synthetic detergent and August, November, 1988. Supplying phosphate free detergent. By the results, we can know that inflow of phosphorus into stream was caused by other pollutant sources than phosphate detergent, and water quality in stream has been improved by considerable decreasing of phosphorus concentration in domestic wastewater resulted from supplying of phosphate free detergent.
